In our previous article, we covered the cost of hiring a maid and if you’re feeling the pinch of inch of the high costs associated with hiring a domestic helper—don’t fret because there are government subsidies available in Singapore to provide financial relief and support for families who employ maids.

Subsidy #1: Home Caregiving Grant (HCG)

This monthly cash grant of S$250-S$400 is given to families who need to hire a maid to care for their loved ones who require permanent assistance with three or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

To be eligible, the care recipient must meet the following criteria:

  • A Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident (PR) (with a parent, child or spouse who is a Singapore Citizen)

  • Household monthly income per person is $2,800 or less; or

  • Annual value of property for household without income is $13,000 or less

  • Those with multiple properties will receive the lower HCG payout of $250 per month

  • Not in a a residential long-term care institution (e.g. nursing home)

  • Requires permanent assistance with three or more ADLs such as washing, dressing, feeding, toileting, walking or moving around, and transferring

Subsidy #2: Caregivers Training Grant (CTG)

Besides the HCG, this is another government subsidy to support family members and FDWs who are caregivers of seniors and those with disability.

The CTG provides subsidies of up to S$200 per eligible care recipient per financial year so family members and domestic helpers can equip themselves with the necessary skills in Caregiver training courses.

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Care recipient must be Singapore Citizen or PR;

  • Care recipient must be aged 65 years old and above, or be certified to have a disability by a doctor; and

  • Caregiver must be the main caregiver (immediate family member or FDW) looking after the care recipient and must complete any of the CTG-approved training courses.

Hiring a domestic helper in Singapore in 2023 can be a practical self-care solution to managing your household, especially when you have specific caregiving needs.
